Costume Research

As I'm playing the student, I thought it would be a good idea to do some research in to what a typical student looks like. However from viewing people around college, there is no 'typical' student look; some people wear band t-shirts and ripped jeans, others jackets and skinny jeans. Because of this, I decided to go for a 'plain' look.

For this, blue or black denim jeans are a must have. These are a staple of most students outfits, and so are a must-have for our student. These can be bought for around £10 from a shop such as Primark, however I already own some blue 'slim' fit jeans - not baggy but not skin tight. These will be suitable for our production

Any kind of white or black t-shirt would be suitable for a plain look, however if we do go for black jeans a black t-shirt will seem quite overpowering and give the impression of a dark, depressed character, which is not something we want. For this reason I think a plain white or a printed white t-shirt will be suitable. Something like this can be bought again from somewhere like Primark for around £6-8. I already own a few white printed shirts which may be suitable to use.

For footwear, there is a recent trend of wearing Converse or Vans made shoes. These may be useful to make the production feel up-to-date and recent, but if not any generic trainers may be used. I do own multiple pairs of Converse and a pair of Vans shoes, so this wont be a problem to for me to use.
Finally I feel a coat or jacket is necessary, as this can be a plain coat and will detract attention from the overall outfit and the 'how fashionable are they' question. A simple black or grey coat will be okay to use. I do own a dark blue waterproof jacket and a grey-ish duffel coat, both of which would be suitable for use.

Overall the student's outfit will be plain and simple, and be nothing radical to make them stand out. The idea is to have the student appear to be 'average' and 'normal', so wearing plain clothes such as blue jeans and a white shirt will make them seem more normal to fit in with the rest of the college.
